On October 16, 2023, it was supposed to be the happiest day of our lives. We were counting down the days to wear white, start our home, and live the dream we had prepared for months. But nine days before, the nightmare began.

The war destroyed everything: our home, the wedding hall, my dress even our memories. In an instant, the dream turned to rubble, and the sounds of celebration turned into the sounds of bombs and fire.

I’m Lama, and like many young people in Gaza, I was dreaming of starting my life with my husband Wissam, with dignity and peace. We’re both nursing graduates. We worked hard for years to build a small home to settle in after our wedding.

We bought everything: furniture, a bedroom set, appliances, wedding items—every small detail brought us joy. We invested all our savings and hopes into that home.

But the war took it all. Everything we built disappeared in a moment. We lost our home, everything we had purchased, and even the most special day of our lives turned into a painful memory.

Today, we are living in very difficult conditions, without proper shelter, without privacy, and without safety. We continue to work every day as nurses, trying to ease people’s suffering, while our own pain remains untreated.

We’re not asking for luxury

we’re just asking for a chance to stand again.
